At inflow, the water is distributed into a limestone bed.

The aim of this bed is:

• To distribute the water evenly into the sand bed
• To neutralise acidity in the incoming water
• To allow bacterials to grow on the limestone, in order to break down organic material, thereby allowing the plants in the following shorezones and ponds to take up the nutrients
